The National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29th July, 2020 keeping in mind the transformational view for Indian Education System. It is a framework provided for next few years under which Elementary, Primary and Higher Education (as well as Vocation Training) will be transformed in both, Rural and Urban India.
Objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) – 2020:
- Attaining Foundational Learning and Numeracy Skills through National Mission by 2025
- Universalisation from ECCE to Secondary Education by 2030 to align with SDG4
- 100% GER in Pre-School to Secondary Level by 2030
- Teachers to be prepared for Assessment Reforms by 2030
- Inclusive and Equitable Education System by 2030
- Board Exams to test core concepts and application knowledge
- Every child will come out of School adept in at least one skill
- Common standards of Learning in public and private schools
Major reforms announced in School Education:
- The stakes in Board exams will be lowered and will test the actual knowledge of the students
- Mother tongue / regional languages to be medium of instruction till 5th grade
- Report Cards will need to be comprehensive reports on skills and capabilities and not just marks and statements
- National Mission to focus on basic literacy and basic numeracy
- Major changes in the pedagogical structure of curriculum with no rigid separation between streams
- Separations between Vocational, Academic, Curricular and extra-Curricular will be removed
