 Shopian is a quaint district in southern Kashmir, India, which is famous for its rich heritage, natural scenery, and bountiful apple orchards.



 Location & Geography

Located at an altitude of 2,146 meters above sea level, Shopian is about 51 km south of Srinagar and 20 km from Pulwama. The district is located in the Pir Panjal mountain range, with its hilly topography and dense forests. Its location near the ancient Mughal Road, which connected Srinagar to Poonch, highlights its strategic importance.

History & Culture

Traditionally referred to as "Shin-Van" (referring to a "snow forest"), Shopian was a significant administrative town under the Mughal regime. It was one of the six Wazarat Headquarters in Kashmir between 1872 and 1892. The town also finds mention for Imam Shahi Hamadan, who came into Kashmir through Shopian to propagate Islam.

Culturally, Shopian is the site of the Jamia Masjid, a 1953 rebuild of a Mughal-era mosque, and the sacred Khankah Pinjoora, containing a sacred relic of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) .

Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary: Covering 341 km², this wildlife sanctuary has varied flora and fauna, including the endangered Hangul deer. 

Peer Ki Gali: A picturesque location on the Mughal Road, with panoramic views and a favorite among trekkers.

Manasbal Lake: Also known as the 'Supreme Gem of Kashmir', this peaceful lake is famous for its serenity and breathtaking views.

Widely referred to as the "Apple Bowl of Kashmir", Shopian's economy is largely agrarian. Apple growing is the main source of livelihood for nearly 60% of its residents, with orchards occupying around 26,231 hectares and yielding 3 to 3.5 lakh metric tonnes yearly. Saffron is also grown in the district to add to its agricultural diversity.

To further support the apple sector, the Union government has sanctioned an "Apple Cluster" scheme in Shopian with the objective of augmenting production, post-harvest handling, and global competitiveness.

 Demographics

Shopian, as per the 2011 Census, has a population of 266,215, with a literacy rate of 62.49%. The population predominantly speaks Kashmiri, followed by Gojri and Pahari. About 95% of the people reside in rural areas.
