 Singapore Fire Crisis: Active Mobility Gadget and Home Fires Skyrocket



Singapore is also confronted with a startling outbreak of cases of fire incidents, in particular, related to active mobility devices (AMDs) and domestic fires. Singapore's Civil Defence Force (SCDF) saw a 21.8% increase in the cases of AMD in the year 2024, marking the second successive year for an increase in such cases. Residual fires, too, are a key area of concern, the most prevalent being caused by cooking left unattended, and electrical malfunctions.


 Active Mobility Devices: A Growing Fire Threat

In 2024, SCDF attended to 67 fires of AMDs, a rise from 55 in 2023. The AMDs, comprising PMDs, PABs, and PMAs, have been at the center of focus for fire safety professionals. Particularly, 44 of these were in homes, which presents concerns regarding domestic usage.


Main Contributing Factors

Unauthorized Modifications: Modification of the device or use of non-standard batteries can compromise safety levels, leading to overheating and fires.


Incorrect Charging Methods: Charging devices overnight or leaving them in close proximity to combustible materials increases the danger of igniting.


Non-compliance: Utilization of devices that are not compliant with needed safety certifications has been implicated in several fire incidents.

 Home Fires: Ongoing Menaces

Home fires are still a serious issue. In 2024, SCDF responded to 968 domestic building fires, with unattended cooking and electrical faults being the top causes. These types of fires typically result in property damage and, sadly, fatalities.

Unattended Cooking: Unattended cooking is still the most common cause of home fires.

Electrical Faults: Wiring faults, overloaded sockets, and malfunctioning appliances are some of the culprits behind many fire outbreaks.

 Deadly Crash: Cooking School Fire

An ongoing fire at central Singapore's Tomato Cooking School claimed the life of a 10-year-old Australian girl and left 21 people, mostly children between the ages of 6 and 10 years, injured. The fire started in a storage space above the school, and unauthorized partitions and other fire safety contraventions were discovered during investigations. The accident serves to emphasize the paramount importance of compliance with fire safety requirements across all premises.

 Public Safety Practices and Public Awareness

As a measure to check fire hazards, the government promotes the following practices in ensuring safety:

Safe Device Usage: Do not tamper with devices and follow manufacturers' guidelines.

Safe Charging Habits: Don't leave devices charging, especially at night.

Regular Checks: Conduct frequent inspections of electrical installations and appliances as part of efforts to identify areas with potential risks.

Public Education: Conduct public awareness campaigns in raising people's awareness of fire prevention and safety.
